SAYINGS OF 'ALI IBN ABI TALIB

أَعْمَالُ الْعِبَادِ فِي عَاجِلِهِمْ، نُصْبُ أَعْيُنِهِمْ فِي آجِلِهِمْ
The actions of people in their present life will be before their eyes in the next life.

أَشْرَفُ الْغِنَى تَرْكُ الْمُنى
The best of riches is the abandonment of desires.

قَلبُ الأَحْمَقِ فِي فِيهِ، وَلِسَانُ الْعَاقِلِ فِي قَلْبِهِ
The heart of a fool is in his mouth while the tongue of the wise man is in his heart.

الْقَنَاعَةُ مَالٌ لاَ يَنْفَدُ
Contentment is wealth that does not diminish.

لاَ تَرَى الْجَاهِلَ إِلاَّ مُفْرِطاً أَوْ مُفَرِّطاً
You will not find an ignorant person but at one extreme or the other.

إِذَا تَمَّ الْعَقْلُ نَقَصَ الْكَلاَمُ
As intelligence increases, speech decreases.

نَفْسُ الْمَرْءِ خُطَاهُ إِلَى أَجَلِهِ
The breath of a man is a step towards his death.

الْحِكْمَةُ ضَالَّةُ الْمُؤْمِنِ
A wise saying is a lost article of the believer.

قِيمَةُ كُلِّ امْرِىء مَا يُحْسِنُهُ
The worth of every man is in his attainments.

مَنْ تَرَكَ قَوْلَ: لاَ أَدْري، أُصِيبَتْ مَقَاتِلُهُ
Whoever abandons saying "I do not know" meets his destruction.

عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ يَقْنَطُ وَمَعَهُ الاسْتِغْفَارُ
I wonder about the man who loses hope despite the possibility of seeking forgiveness.

مَنْ أَصْلَحَ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ اللهِ أَصْلَحَ اللهُ مَا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ النَّاسِ،
وَمَنْ أَصْلَحَ أَمْرَ آخِرَتِهِ أَصْلَحَ اللهُ لَهُ أَمْرَ دُنْيَاهُ
If a man behaves properly in matters between himself and God,
then God keeps proper the matters between him and other people;
and if a man keeps proper the affairs of his next life
then God keeps proper for him the affairs of this world.

مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ وَاعِظٌ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ اللهِ حَافِظٌ
Whoever is a preacher for himself is protected by God.

الدُّنْيَا دَارُ مَمَرٍّ إلى دَارِ مَقَرٍّ
This world is a place for transit, not a place for stay.

هَلَكَ امْرُؤُ لَمْ يَعْرِفْ قَدْرَهُ
He who does not know his own worth is ruined.

قَدْ بُصّرْتُمْ إِنْ أَبْصَرْتُمْ، وَقَدْ هُدِيتُمْ إِنِ اهْتَدَيْتُمْ، وأُسْمِعْتُمْ إِنِ اسْتَمَعْتُمْ
Surely, you have been made to see if only you care to see;
surely, you have been guided if only you care to take guidance;
and surely, you have been made to hear if only you care to lend your ears.

الإِعْجَابُ يَمْنَعُ مِنَ الاِزْدِيَادَ
Vanity prevents progress.

قَدْ أَضَاءَ الصُّبْحُ لِذِي عَيْنَيْنِ
For the man who has eyes the dawn has already appeared.

النَّاسُ أَعْدَاءُ مَا جَهِلُوا
People are enemies of what they do not know.

ثَمَرَةُ التَّفْرِيطِ النَّدَامَةُ، وَثَمَرَةُ الْحَزْمِ السَّلاَمَةُ
The result of neglect is shame, while the result of far-sightedness is safety.

إِنَّ هذِهِ الْقُلُوبَ تَمَلُّ كَمَا تَمَلُّ الأَبْدَانُ، فَابْتَغُوا لَهَا طَرَائِفَ الْحِكْمَةِ
The hearts become tired as the bodies become tired.
You should therefore search for beautiful sayings for them.

عُجْبُ الْمَرْءِ بِنَفْسِهِ أَحَدُ حُسَّادِ عَقْلِهِ
A man’s vanity for himself is one of the enemies of his intelligence.

فِي تَقَلُّبِ الأَحْوَالِ عِلْمُ جَوَاهِرِ الرِّجَالِ
Through change of circumstances the mettle of men is known.

أَكْثَرُ مَصَارِعِ الْعُقُولِ تَحْتَ بُرُوقِ الْمَطَامِعِ
Most of the deficiency of intelligence occurs due to the flash of greed.

إِنَّ قَوْماً عَبَدُوا اللَّهَ رَغْبَةً فَتِلْكَ عِبَادَةُ التُّجَّارِ،
وَإِنَّ قَوْماً عَبَدُوا اللَّهَ رَهْبَةً فَتِلْكَ عِبَادَةُ الْعَبِيدِ،
وَإِنَّ قَوْماً عَبَدُوا اللَّهَ شُكْراً فَتِلْكَ عِبَادَةُ الأَحْرَارِ
A group of people worshipped God out of desire for reward, this is the worship of traders.
Another group worshipped God out of fear, this is the worship of slaves.
Still another group worshipped God out of gratefulness, this is the worship of free men.

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ فِي كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ حَقّاً، فَمَنْ أَدَّاهُ زَادَهُ مِنْهَا،
وَمَنْ قَصَّرَ مِنْهُ خَاطَرَ بِزَوَالِ نِعْمَتِهِ
Surely in every blessing there is a responsibility towards God.
If one discharges that responsibility God increases the blessing,
and if one falls short of doing so one stands in danger of losing the blessing.

مَنْ ظَنَّ بِكَ خَيْراً فَصَدِّقْ ظَنَّهُ
If a person has a good idea about you make his idea be true.

عَرَفْتُ اللَّهَ سُبْحَانَهُ بِفَسْخِ الْعَزَائِمِ، وَحَلِّ الْعُقُودِ
I came to know God, the Glorified, through the breaking of determinations,
change of intentions and the losing of courage.

مَرَارَةُ الدُّنْيَا حَلاَوَةُ الأَخِرَةِ، وَحَلاَوَةُ الدُّنْيَا مَرَارَةُ الأَخِرَةِ
The sourness of this world is the sweetness of the next world
while the sweetness of this world is the sourness of the next one.

إِنَّ كَلاَمَ الْحُكَمَاءِ إذَا كَانَ صَوَاباً كَانَ دَوَاءً، وَإِذَا كَانَ خَطَأً كَانَ دَاءً
When the utterance of the wise is to the point it serves as a cure, but if it is wrong it is a disease.

مَنْ تَذَكَّرَ بُعْدَ السَّفَرِ اسْتَعَدَّ
Whoever keeps in view the distance of the journey remains prepared.

مَا قَالَ النَّاسُ لِشَيْءٍ: طُوبَى لَهُ، إِلاَّ وَقَدْ خَبَأَ لَهُ الدَّهْرُ يَوْمَ سَوْءٍ
For everything to which people say "How good!" there is an evil hidden in this world.

لاَ يَصْدُقُ إِيمَانُ عَبْد،
حَتّى يَكُونَ بِمَا فِي يَدِ اللهِ سُبْحَانَهُ أَوْثَقَ مِنهُ بِمَا فِي يَدِهِ
The belief of a person cannot be regarded as true
unless his trust in what is with God is more than his trust in what he himself has.

لَوْ رَأَى الْعَبْدُ الأَجَلَ وَمَسِيرَهُ لاَبْغَضَ الأَمَلَ وَغُرُورَهُ
If a man happens to see the end of his life and his final fate,
he will begin hating desires and their deception.

الْعِلْمُ عِلْمَانِ: مَطْبُوعٌ وَمَسْمُوعٌ، وَلاَ يَنْفَعُ الْمَسْمُوعُ إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنِ الْمَطْبُوعُ
Knowledge is of two kinds – that which is absorbed and that which is just heard.
The one that is heard does not give benefit unless it is absorbed.

الْعَفَافُ زِينَةُ الْفَقْرِ، وَالشُّكْرُ زِينَةُ الْغِنَى
The beauty of destitution is chastity and the beauty of riches is gratefulness.

مَنْ نَظَرَ فِي عَيْبِ نَفْسِهِ اشْتَغَلَ عَنْ عَيْبِ غَيْرهِ
He who sees his own shortcomings abstains from looking into other’s shortcomings.

أَكْبَرُ الْعَيْبِ أَنْ تَعِيبَ مَا فِيكَ مِثْلُهُ
The greatest defect is to regard that defect in others which is present in yourself.

لاَ تَظُنَّنَّ بِكَلِمَة خَرَجَتْ مِنْ أَحَد سَوءاً، وَأَنْتَ تَجِدُ لَهَا فِي الْخَيْرِ مُحْتَمَلاً
Do not regard an expression uttered by any person as evil if you find it capable of bearing some good.

مِنَ الْخُرْقِ الْمُعَاجَلَةُ قَبْلَ الاِمْكَانِ، وَالاَناةُ بَعْدَ الْفُرْصَةِ
To make haste before the proper time or to delay after a proper opportunity, in either case is folly.

يَأْتِي عَلَى النَّاسِ زَمَانٌ لاَ يَبْقى فِيهِمْ مِنَ الْقُرآنِ إِلاَّ رَسْمُهُ،
وَمِنَ الاِسْلاَمِ إِلاَّ اسْمُهُ
A time will come when nothing will remain of the Qur’an except its writing,
and nothing of Islam except its name.

الْبُخْلُ جَامعٌ لِمَسَاوِىءِ الْعُيُوبِ، وَهُوَ زِمَامٌ يُقَادُ بهِ إِلَى كُلِّ سُوء
Miserliness contains all other evil vices and is the rein with which one can be led to every evil.

مَنْ صَارَعَ الْحَقَّ صَرَعَهُ
Whoever wrestles with the Truth would be floored by it.

الْقَلْبُ مُصْحَفُ الْبَصَرِ
The heart is the book of the eye.

التُّقَى رَئِيسُ الأَخْلَاقِ
Godwariness is the chief trait of human character.

كَفَاكَ مِنْ عَقْلِكَ مَا أَوْضَحَ لَكَ سَبِيلَ غَيِّكَ مِنْ رُشْدِكَ
It is enough if your wisdom distinguishes for you the ways of going astray from those of guidance.

مَنْ أَصْلَحَ سَرِيرَتَهُ أَصْلَحَ اللهُ عَلاَنِيَتَهُ
Whoever sets right his inner self, God sets right his outer self.

إِنَّ أَوْلِيَاءَ اللهِ هُمُ الَّذِينَ نَظَرُوا إِلَى بَاطِنِ الدُّنْيَا إِذَا نَظَرَ النَّاسُ إِلَى ظَاهِرِهَا،
وَاشْتَغَلُوا بِآجِلِهَا إِذَا آشْتَغَلَ النَّاسُ بِعَاجِلِهَا
The lovers of God are those who look at the inward side of the world
while the other people look at its outward side,
they busy themselves with its remoter benefits
while the other people busy themselves in the immediate benefits.

أَلاَ حُرٌّ يَدَعُ هذِهِ اللُّمَاظَةَ لِأَهْلِهَا ؟
إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لِأَنْفُسِكُمْ ثَمَنٌ إِلاَّ الْجَنَّةَ، فَلاَ تَبِيعُوهَا إِلاَّبِهَا
Is there no free man who can leave this chewed morsel (of the world) to those who like it?
Surely, the only price for you selves is Paradise.
Therefore, do not sell yourself except for Paradise.

اذْكُرُا انقِطَاعَ اللَّذَّات، وَبَقَاءَ التَّبِعَاتِ
Remember that pleasures will pass away while the consequences will stay.

الاِيمَانِ أَنْ تُؤثِرَ الصِّدْقَ حَيْثُ يَضُرُّكَ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ حَيْثُ يَنْفَعُكَ
Belief means that you should prefer truth even when it harms you rather than falsehood even when it benefits you.

الدُّنْيَا خُلِقَتْ لِغَيْرِهَا، ولَمْ تُخْلَقْ لِنَفْسِهَا
This world has been created for other than itself and has not been created for itself.

التَّوْحِيدُ أنْ لا تَتَوَهَّمَهُ، وَالْعَدْلُ أَلاَّ تَتَّهِمَهُ
Oneness means that you do not subject Him to the limitations of your imagination,
and justice means that you do not lay any blame on Him.
